  • Background

WELCOME BACK. Here is the new season of San Juanillo. We had this last year, you guys loved it. This season is just as good, so it's back for a 2nd tour. A truly beautiful Costa Rican Single Origin!

Finca V&G (Vargas and Gutierrez) San Juanillo is the combined efforts of an agronomist (Tomas Gutierrez) and an industrial engineer (Allan Vargas). The pair had a collective vision for this 4 hectare farm in San Juanillo, Naranjo when they acquired it in 2007.

Experimentation with hybrid varieties has been their initial main focus. These hybrid varietals were developed to take the best qualities from different varieties with a few major goals in mind, namely improving cup quality, crop yield, and being resistant to disease. Ours is the H1 varietal, a hybrid of the Sarchimor and Sudan Rume varietals. It’s a beautiful naturally processed coffee.

She reminds us of classic natural Costa Ricans from the good old days. Trust us when we say they don’t come through this way anymore. Upon the first sip, we taste the refined complexity and sweetness of dark grapes and treacle. Heavy on the sweetness indeed, the cup then transitions to present a boozy kick of sweet bourbon in the finish. She’s breath-taking indeed.
