  • Background

Kiawamururu is a settlement in Mukurwe-ini subcounty, southern Nyeri County, on the foothills of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare ranges. The name comes from the Kikuyu phrase “kia wa mururu” - “place of the mururu shrubs.

Mururu were medicinal plants that once grew abundantly here; because they only thrived in fertile soils, the area quickly became known as a place where farming made sense. Today the landscape is a patchwork of small coffee gardens, dairy farms, and schools like

Kiawamururu Primary and Njiruini Secondary, all sitting around 1,700– 1,850 m above sea level on deep red volcanic soils.

Coffee here is grown mainly by smallholder families tending less than a hectare of land. Plots are typically planted with SL28 and SL34, alongside newer Ruiru 11 and Batian trees. The older SL trees, first released by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in the mid-20th century, are valued for their deep root systems and ability to manage water stress, while the newer Ruiru 11 and Batian trees bring disease resistance and earlier production. Many farms now carry a mix of these cultivars, sometimes grafting Ruiru 11 onto SL root-stock to combine resilience, yield and cup quality.

We taste lovely notes of sweet blackcurrant jam, coupled with the vibrant acidity and juiciness of pomegranate. The sweetness refines and deepens to that of raisin, finishing off with the lingering note of golden syrup. This coffee is very very sweet. Like very very very sweet. ... Sweet.
