  • Background

We have been on the lookout for a natural Rwanda for some time, and we finally found her! This coffee from the Bugoyi Factory is one that is high in sweetness, with a big body and some funk to keep things fun.

In the western Rutsiro district, coffee farms are located at altitudes between 1,500 and 1,900 meters, where stable day-night temperature variations and gentle breezes from Lake Kivu provide ideal conditions for coffee growth. This highland is considered one of the cradles of Rwanda’s specialty beans.

Bugoyi coffee mainly comes from smallholder single-family farms, with trees averaging 38 years of age, harvested by hand. Compared to mechanized or large-scale plantations, this smallholder approach allows cherries to be picked at peak ripeness, contributing to stable cup quality. After harvest, the cherries are usually processed using natural sun-drying, where the fruit dries slowly under the sun, allowing sugars and aromas to be fully absorbed into the beans. This method, combined with traditional wooden drying beds, enhances the richness and complexity of the flavor.

On the first sip, you'll get the full-bodied juiciness of a ripe dark plum, followed by the complexity of mulled red apple juice. It has the sweetness of light treacle and a lingering milk chocolate finish to round off the cup. Delicious!
